Why You MUST Hire a Professional Industry Hair and Makeup Artist for your next Production
I often come across producers and directors who say they simply have no budget for Hair and Makeup for their Production. Often they think there is not real need or necessity for one and skip or save money by having the actors do their own. A huge mistake, Hair and Makeup are just as import to a script as the actors themselves, if fact it is a viable part of the character itself. It can often make the difference in a production go from looking like it was shot with a cell phone camera to a potential award winning film. Please read this great article on Why You Really Need A Hair and Makeup Artist on Set
Written By Rebecca McGillicuddy: Professional Makeup Artist
Reasons You MUST Hire a Professional Makeup Artist
- A professional makeup artist keeps up with their industry. They know what's new coming out, what works and what is a waste of time and money. Certain makeup is specifically made for pictures, film and high definition video, and your makeup artist should know the difference.
- A professional makeup artist needs to be organized! They are many times the first person on set. They are there to set up usually 30 minutes or more before your talent gets there. If they show up late and fumbling over their materials, it's a bad start to your day.
- The first person your talent sees is your makeup artist. The makeup artist will be in their personal space for a decent amount of time. So your make up artist better professional, considerate and it wouldn't help for them to be great to get a long with! You want your talent happy, not dreading the day.
- Your makeup artist needs to be gentle. There has been way too many off the street makeup artists who beat up the talent in the chair. They are rough and inconsiderate. When the talent falls asleep in their makeup chair, you know you have a gentle makeup artist!
- A professional makeup artist needs to be schooled enough to know how to get the effect the director is looking for. How many makeup artists live by the motto, "fake it until you make it." That might work well with the student film makers, but in the commercial industry, that's not the artist you want to hire. The makeup artist should know you pop the eyes or lips, but not both unless you are trying to get the hooker look!
- A professional makeup artist should know the subtle difference between the makeup and looks for each decade. Nothing will ruin a movie more than setting the movie in one decade the makeup artist not knowing how to do the makeup for that decade. The director is not going to notice subtle things the audience will pick up on. That's why you pay a professional makeup artist good money, because they know their job!
- A good makeup artist will be able to take direction from a director, but still be able to interject their opinions for feedback. There is nothing worse than an unteachable employee who decides to do things their way. A production is the collaboration of many peoples' work under the direction of one vision. The makeup artist needs to not be afraid to ask questions and understand the vision!
- A professional makeup artist needs to be versatile. Being one of the first on set, they will probably meet the actors first. They will probably need to give them a quick tour of the set, where the crafts table will be set up, where the restrooms are located, etc. A well rounded makeup artist is there to be an asset to the production, which means if they need to do other duties outside of their specialty, they do it!
- A good makeup artist is literally an artist. They use the human skin as their canvas, and each person they work on is a perfect painting!
- The professional makeup artist is there for more than just a paycheck. They are there because they love what they do, and makeup is their life. Every time they pick up that brush, that sponge, they are undoubtedly giving you everything, every time.
Hopefully this will give those production companies just getting off the ground a good guideline on how to select a professional makeup artist. Each person hired into a production should go through a rigorous selection process! A chain is no stronger than it's weakest link, and a production is no better than it's worst employee. Audiences will notice mistakes and that's what sticks with them more than the director's vision.

Late Night Books and a little Highlight
Just got a few music videos I worked on you can link to them to watch here. I am also working on books. Not the fun part of owning your own business. I am often quoted saying "I majored in Makeup, not math" har har. If you are more artistic than a business savvy numbers game it might be a good idea to outsource or hire someone to do this part for you. I luckily have the books dictator, aka, my mom helping me with mine.

Updating Resume
Today I am starting this blog, not because I particularly want to but because I know I have too. So here it goes. Today, I am updating resume for submission for the Colorado Fashion Week Panel. I love speaking about makeup almost as much as I like putting it one people, self and shopping for it! It will be great opportunity to market self and the importance of makeup in fashion. So question, how important is makeup to your daily routine and fashion in general. What trends do you see in fashion and makeup this Fall and Winter?
ps. also need some fresh takes and ideas on the whole I am a teenaged girl possessed by a demon thang!
